Young Artist Highlight: Jenny An

Outsight will begin highlighting young artists, starting with Jenny An! ⏰ “My name is Jenny An and I live in New York. I am 17 years old and I have been drawing ever since I was born. My works are surrealist and conceptual. The mix of illusions and realism that appears in my work is something that you would not normally expect. I express my creative side by taking risks; I am not afraid to explore different materials, techniques, forms, or ideas in art. I sometimes do not make thumbnail sketches before creating the final piece because I choose to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity."

"An example is when I created a pendulum with a tripod, a contact solution bottle, and a string. I filled the contact solution bottle with diluted acrylic paint and let unpredictability take its role. This gave a great effect on the clock painting, tying the whole piece together with movement and further enhancing the theme of surrealism. Another example is the mice drawing. I created this piece when I was struggling with mice problems at home. I challenged myself to combine certain things that may seem hard to connect. I thought it would be fun to incorporate a glitch effect since mice are seen as ‘errors’."

"I believe that by learning from your mistakes and taking risks rather than limiting yourself in fear of criticism is what defines you to be an artist. The unexpected moments I have experienced when producing art are what motivate me to become a more creative artist.” ⏰
